rob.fontTomorrow night Rob Font (10-1-0) drops down to Bantamweight and makes his UFC debut on their historic Independence Day card. The Sityodtong product is on a 9 fight win streak, which earned him the #1 ranking of Featherweight in New England. On the way he also won the CES Featherweight Championship with a stoppage over Chris Foster. In his last bout he knocked out Tristan Johnson in a potential KO of the year candidate in April. His lone loss came at Lightweight to current Bellator fighter Desmond Green back in 2012. Wins over Saul Almeida & Lucas Cruz last year, really put him at the top of the fighters in the area.

george roopOriginally looked to be lined up against Brazilian Douglas Andrade, Font will now be facing long time UFC veteran George Roop. Roop (15-10-1) is 6’1 with a 72” reach, the longest in the Bantamweight division. This veteran is one of 4 fighters to gain victories in the UFC in 3 different weight classes, a stat even the UFC forgot when announcing BJ Penn has the chance to join Diego Sanchez & Kenny Florian in this category. (Vitor Belfort is the other forgotten fighter in their stats winning at Heavyweight, LHW, & Middleweight) Roop entered the UFC off the 5th season of the Ultimate Fighter going 1-2 as a Lightweight before getting cut. He was brought back as a featherweight to the WEC, but actually fought as a Bantamweight as a last-minute replacement against Eddie Wineland in his first WEC bout. He drew Leonard Garcia, then had an amazing KO win over Chan Sung Jung, the biggest in his career, before WEC fighters were absorbed into the UFC. He went 1-3 as a Featherweight in the UFC, then decided to drop down to Bantamweight as has gone an impressive 3-1, losing only to Francisco Rivera last November, but rebounded with a win over Dustin Kimura in April. He has a win over former Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles in May of 2013.

Roop will definitely be a tough task for the Florida born Font, but if he can emulate Mark Hominick’s fast hands in his bout with Roop, Font could notch another KO in his belt. The fight will kick off the Fox Sports 1 broadcast of the UFC 175 prelims at 8pm EST. Tune in and support your local fighter!
