Bill Jones suffered a decision loss to Tommy Marcellino tonight at WSOF 35 in Verona, NY. As self prophesied, Bill won over the local crowd showing the heart it takes to go all three rounds on three weeks notice.
The crowd was substantially filled in for the undercard so we didn’t experience the typical lack of energy that comes along with early night bouts. Bill’s fight was moved from first to fifth just before the event kicked off. Referee Kevin MacDonald oversaw the action in this fight.
Tommy came out swinging as Bill grinned in the pocket. A high kick to a single (you just have to see it to understand…) gave Bill the first take down of the bout as well as Marcellino’s back for the bulk of the round. Marecllino escaped and sprawled Bill’s second shot but decided to use the position to rest til the warning clack.
Bill went right to work in round two with an immediate takedown that Tommy stood out of after a few minutes of work. Bill slipped to his back but his opponent didn’t do much with the advantageous position. After a few minutes hanging out in Bill’s open guard, the round came to an end.
In the third and final round, both fighters traded sprawls until Bill was taken down soundly after just missing a spinning heel kick. Marcellino used his obvious size advantage to keep Bill on the ground. Back on his feet in the remaining seconds of the fight, Bill landed a few decent send off punches.
The judges scored the bout 29-28, 30-27, 30-27, all for Marcellino.
