Combat Zone 62 Preview and Predictions

| June 26, 2017 | 0 Comments

Manchester NH — I’m re-naming this card to “Future”. Posthumously named Legendary, I feel the latter applies better now that we’ve had changes to the card over the past week.

Intriuguingly enough, The card has gotten better in the  waning moments of the weeks end. A tragic injury to headliner Drew Fickett has caused the stir-up this week and although unfortunate we won’t see his return this event, Combat Zone has put together an outstanding card for the local fan.

Just beyond the doors of the Raddison Hotel in Manchester, NH you will find a plethora of New England’s top fighters. A card that will to the trained eye compete for fight card of the year looks to be the first sell out in the new location for Combat Zone. Newly titled “Future” by yours truly, this card boast the best amateurs you’ll find in New England. Not one title fight overshadows any particular fight here as many undercard amateur bouts could easily headline this event. A stud of a card comes from its core. The meat of the line-up will be the most exciting as top ten talent flourishes throughout.

Lets get to the Featured bouts and Predictions.

Per usual, Combat Zone starts the night off with its very unique Kickboxing bouts. No other promotion in New England holds kickboxing bouts. It’s a great mix with the MMA fights and also a great lead-in as some of the kickboxing fights are very fun to watch. Its a great way for MMA fighters to find additional fights as weve seen them cross over from MMA to kickboxing. One of the better ones has been Ray Shawdee. Ray is undefeated as a kick boxer and crosses back over on this event and will headline with an MMA bout. Just a few kickboxing bouts this show but here is who we’ll see.

155lbs Andrew Kamakas 0-1 (Fusion Training Academy) vs Matt Cruz 0-0 (NETT)

155lbs David Foss 2-0 (Natnapa Muay Thai) vs Alexey Soroka 2-0 (Young’s MMA)

125lbs Crystal Demers 2-0 (Team Fury) vs Lisa DellaRusso 0-0(PMA)

The amateur MMA portion of the card is stacked and my favorite part of this card. Hence the name “future” came in to play here because the fighters here will be cracking the top ten pro’s very soon as they all are very deep into their amateur careers.

♦ 195lbs Jon McNeil 2-1 (Triumph) vs Thomas Lee Davis Jr. 3-1 (Juniko)

Tommy Lee makes his return off a great showing despite a loss at CZ61 where he fell to Martin Thompson in a close decision at welterweight. Tommy Lee showed signs of greatness in the opening round with his striking. Albeit a bit cocky, he showboating succumbed to the great takedowns of Martin. Davis is a huge welterweight but bumping up to a catch at 195 with stud wrestler Jon Mcneil.

McNeil presents a huge problem here for Davis. A wrestling pedigree that few in New England can compare, is just the beginning of the problems Tommy Lee will have in this fight. McNeil is a monster, a true middleweight, 195 is not far off his normal fight weight but far above Davis’. If this fight gets to the floor Davis will have some trouble getting out. and with the size difference here Mcneil punches like a heavyweight as Davis albeit a very good striker, is still just a welterweight.

This fight has all the makings of fight of the night material.

Prediction:   McNeil via RNC

♦ 145lbs Nick Fiore 2-1 (Renzo Gracie NH) vs Carl Langston 6-8 (Young’s MMA)

An interesting bout as 14 fight veteran Carl Langston continues his reformation tour. The Newly minted Youngs MMA fighter has looked awesome since joining the powerhouse team from Maine. Currently riding a two fight win streak, Langston will have his hands full with the young and talented Jiu Jitsu ace Nick Fiore. The ladder had taken his talents to Premier FC where he won their lightweight amateur title in his first appearance as a lightweight. Now returning to featherweight, Fiore looks to seal a potential title bid with Combat Zone at Featherweight since former champion Jon Dumas has vacated to go pro. It’s a blurry picture right now as former champion Brendan Marotte battles stud Shawn Melanson and Sambo Specialist Costantino are all in the mix for a shot. Constantino holds the only loss on Fiore’s record.

Prediction: Nick Fiore via Armbar

♦ 135lbs Jack Greene 2-4 (Cagestrikers) vs Jake Pilla 4-2 (Spero’s/SLS)

After almost two years off, Jake Pilla will make a much anticipated return to the cage he’s been most popular in. One of Combat Zone’s most beloved fighters, Pilla makes his debut as a bantamweight after a very successful run a featherweight. Winning his first four bouts in dominant fashion, Pilla hit a bump in the road with Danny Abad and lost two consecutive to the Jacksons MMA star. Pilla fights Jack Greene out of Salisbury NH. The gritty, striker from Hampton beach may look like a model but he’s all fight. Greene is one of the scrappiest bantamweights in New England. his 2-4 record doesnt nearly recognize his talent. A great striker with a slick ground attack, Greene has outmatched himself in almost all his bouts. His “I’ll fight anyone” Ralph Johnson attitude is the reason for his misfortune. If Greene can catch Pilla clean though or keep this fight standing….He has a serious shot at handing the Gorilla his third straight loss.

Prediction: Jake Pilla via dec.

♦ 160lbs Shawn Melanson 3-1 (Gate City) vs Brendon Marotte 5-2 (Start BJJ NH)

This fight has fireworks written all over it! The Main event in my opinion. There will be blood, someone will get hurt and a possible friendship will either be crushed or pulled together tighter than before.

As stated, these are friends. Friends dont fight do they? They do on this show. Bad blood, Hardly.. Just two of the top featherweights in New England looking to take another step forward. I admire the fact these two are willing to put friendship aside to see who is the better fighter and who is ready for the pro ranks.

Marotte and Melanson have reeked havok on the featherweight division in New England. Two of the very best. Both are returning off a recent loss and someone sadly continues with a second straight. A devistating blow to either fighter should they lose. Marotte the former champ looks to regain his title but first must get through Melanson who too is in the running for the strap. Melanson a technician on the ground and a hulk of a featherweight will have to get the fight to the ground against maybe the most feared amateur striker on the circuit. Marotte has made a grave of featherweights with his strikes until he ran into Jon Douma, but even Douma suffered at the hand of Marotte albeit sneaking a decision he did not wear the win all that well. Martha on the other hand is suspect on the ground and he too will have his own disadvantages here against Melanson who has the very strong grappling pedigree.

Prediction: Toss up???

♦ 150lbs Brandon Odom 0-1 (WreckRoom) vs Dylan Lockard 2-0 (Start BJJ NH)

This is a homecoming fight for Dylan Lockard as the undefeated featherweight was very successful as an amateur posting a 4-0 record under the Combat Zone banner before turning pro. Lockard has since improved to 2-0 as a professional and makes his long awaited return to his Home in New Hampshire to fight in front of the hometown crowd. Lockard, a beast of a wrestler has recently shown powerful strikes as of late and molded into a very well rounded fighter. His opponent Brandon Odom of Ohio has over 30 amateur bouts of which 13 wins came via submission. Odom’s last appearance was a loss to Vovka Clay at CZ61 via TKO in the first round. Odom is a very big threat on the ground but was just outmatched against Clay. The wrestling of Lockard and the jiu jitsu of Odom may cancel out and create a nice stand-up fight in this one.

Prediction: Lockard via TKO

185lbs Mitch Whitesel 17-27 (WreckRoom) vs Sean Lally 5-2 (Juniko)

Sean Lally knocks people down. With his fist. A LOT

Mitch Whitesel eats fists. A LOT

Prediction: Lally via KO

♦155lbs Vovka Clay 5-2 (Triumph) vs Taylor Trahan 6-7 (Team Link North)

Two great Jiu Jitsu fighters meet here as Vovka Clay will look to extend on a current two fight win streak. Clay’s only loss’ have come within the top ten of the New England rankings. Trayhan has split his last two as he’s 1-1 but an injury is what caused his last loss. A grinder, Trayhan will look to take Clay into deep waters with his blanketing offense. Trayhan has never been a flashy fighter but gets the job done. He may be a wet blanket but everyone knows it and some cant stop it. Vovka is much more aggressive and should neutralize the wet towel offense if he keeps the pace up, if he lets Trayhan have his way this fight can get boring fast.

Prediction: Clay via Choke

♦ 174lbs Wilfredo Santiago 7-4 (Jackson’s MMA/F5) vs Ray Shawdee 5-2 (NETT)

Great fight between two veterans. This fight will rarely hit the ground I think. Both avid strikers and very hard hitters, You’d think we can bet on a KO here. Hardly…These two have chins like none other I’ve seen. Very familiar with one another, I dont expect this fight to get out of control. I expect a very respectful trade of shots for all three rounds and i think we will go to a decision.

Prediction: Toss up??

That does it for this preview. Combat Zone is still currently searching for an opponent for Lucas Cruz as Fickett is out. If anyone wants to get off the couch and make a go at it, Call Calvin Kattar and make sure you have insurance.
